Did You Know There’s a Right Way to Hang Curtains?

It's true; hanging curtains is actually a complex process. Well, maybe not complex, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. Don't fret if you've been doing it wrong, though, just follows these tips to correct your decorating faux pas.

Pick the right size. If your window panels are only wide enough to just cover your windows when they're closed, they're probably too small. You want your curtains to have a bit of give, even when they're pulled shut. To rectify this, purchase four panels for each set of windows. They should also be the proper length. Opt for curtains that are long enough to at least skim the ground when they're hung high.
Hang them high enough. That leads into the next issue: how high to hang your curtains. Most people hang the curtain rod an inch or two above the window, but this can actually make your windows feel smaller and the room closed off. Instead, situate your curtain rods about two-thirds of the way between the top of the window and the ceiling (closer to the ceiling). This will allow for ample light.
Hang them wide enough. If you hang the curtains high enough but the panels are too close together when pulled open, your windows are still going to end up looking smaller than they are. Opt for curtain rods that extend at least 10 inches beyond either side edge of your windows.
