How to Keep Pets Off Your Furniture

Being a dog parent is a rewarding job, but it also comes with its share of trials. One of them is figuring out how to keep your beloved pup off the couch. Just because he's your BFF doesn't mean he's reserved the right to snuggle up with you after a muddy summer walk. Just follow these three tips, and you'll have no trouble training him to stay in his proper place.

  1. Set the ground rules early on. When dogs are teensy and adorable, it's really hard to say no to them. But if you indulge that pint-sized puppy, before you know it, you'll have a huge dog on your hands and on your couch. As tough as it is, set the precedent that pooches aren't allowed on the couch as early on as possible, and make sure everyone who lives in your home consistently adheres to the policy.
  2. Provide another equally comfy option. Okay, so your pup isn't allowed on the couch. Where's he supposed to go? Give him an alternative that's equally cozy and inviting, like a plush dog bed. Place it in the living room so he can still hang out with you while you lounge on the couch without shedding on the upholstery.
  3. Offer rewards for obedience. It's going to take some time for your dog to understand the rules, even if you lay them down right away. You can help speed up the process by offering praise (and a treat) every time he obeys your command to get off the couch or when he picks his own dog bed from the start.
