How to Make Your Own Terrarium

A terrarium is a great way to bring some greenery into your apartment without adding lots of chores to your daily to-do list. The low-maintenance pieces of decor are easy to build and even easier to maintain. Follow these steps to make your own terrarium.

  1. Gather your materials. Before you get started, collect everything you need to make your terrarium. That includes a clear glass or plastic container, charcoal or soil, the plants, and any figurines or other cute elements you want to add.
  2. Lay a foundation. Closed terrariums require a layer of ground charcoal on the bottom to keep the soil fresh. But if your terrarium will be open, you can just add a layer of pebbles for drainage. Then add the soil, allowing space to place your plants on top.
  3. Add the plants. Next comes the star of the show, the greenery. Situate your plants on top of the soil and fill in the gaps with more soil. Make sure you spread them out adequately so that there's room for each plant to flourish.
  4. Top it off. Fill in any gaps that require more soil and add any fun embellishments you like, such as moss, small trinkets, or figurines.
